Integrating Your Local Area Network

There are many facets to the installation of your internet connection. Each phase involves proper configuration of hardware and software so that you may communicate from your desktop to anywhere on the Global Internet.

PSINet's Corporate Installations Group will work with your Technical Contact, via one hour telephone appointments, to get your internet service up and running. The following is a basic checklist for the installation of your internet connection:

TCP/IP must be configured on at least one host (PC, MAC, etc.) on your Local Area Network.

Network number, subnetting and general networking information is provided in addition to specific TCP/IP configuration instructions for many computing platforms.

Domain Name Service (DNS) should already be setup via the DNS Survey Form which helps facilitate the registration or transfer of your domain name.

We will maintain your domain name on our Domain Name Servers unless you prefer to maintain your own local name server. Our Domain Name Specialists can help you in setting up a local name server and in adding hosts to your DNS.

Routing Hardware must be connected and configured specifically for your network connection.

If you ordered hardware from us you will receive the router pre-configured for your network. Included with your router you will receive a print out of the router configuration along with a Router Setup Packet describing how to connect and test your router.

Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) server and email client software are required if you intend to send and receive email.

Some other optional services that Corporate Installations would be happy to assist you with are as follows:

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a tool that allows you to monitor the bandwidth usage on your leased line service.

Usenet News Service offers a news feed, where you would provide a local news server at your site. Alternatively, we provide a multi-client news service. This allows 5 users, concurrently, to access news from a PSINet server, at no charge. Additional users may be added for a small service charge.

Security Packet Filters can be applied to the WAN port of your router.

And most important, you are completely satisfied that your LAN is integrated into the world-wide Internet!
